Harmannus Wassing's biography
Harmannus Wassing, Mans, was born April 11, 1927 in the parental home, in 'tZandt,
Groningen. He grew up in the time of financial uncertainty and a shortage of work and money. He did well in school and never
caused any problems.Mans was a serious person and was often called (preacher) by family members, the complete opposite of his
older brother John but despite their difference in nature, they were very close and spent most of their time together.
Got in scrapes and fights together and mischief as well. One Sunday John, his older brother, and Mans went swimming which
was just not done by Christian Reformed people, it was considered a sin. Jumping in the water Mans promptly jumped in some
glass and cut his foot badly. Mans thought he was going to do die for swimming on a Sunday. Mans was a gifted musical
person like his parents, although he could not keep a tune, but on a trumpet he was magic. He played in several bands and
won prizes in contests. He was asked to play the last post for the opening of the war victims museum in Hooghalen, Drenthe.
In the army when they found out he played the trumpet about an half year or so, before his discharge, he played the reveille
and post. He played in a band for 39 years. Mans, like his Dad had a love for the land and growing things and followed
in his father's footsteps, went to night school to learn more, he kept working for Dad till he got married to Anna Bos in
a triple wedding on May 4, 1951. Dad had bought a small produce and fruit farm in another province that was managed
by a younger brother who, after he immigrated to Canada, Mans bought the farm from Dad. Mans worked that farm for several
years but life on a small farm is hard when you are trying to feed a family. He applied and received an offer to come work
for a canning company, Wilco, as quality control person, which he accepted. He loved that work and did this for several years.
He sold the little farm and bought a new house, where Mom came to live with them for almost a year, after Dad passed away.By
then they had the children and were busy with all kinds of activities. They also were musical and the oldest 3 played in bands
as well, the youngest, Anne, learned to play the organ but was not really a lover of that kind of music. After the company
closed down,Mans found another job in a export and import plant, Kroon, and worked there, until it stopped functioning. Mans
also loved sports and played soccer. Later in life he was busy with raising money for the local, well known soccer club. Mans
was also an active member in the church and fulfilled his functions with the same attention as he did all the other things.
He could be trusted to keep his word once it was given. With Mans it was either right or wrong and was pretty verbal about
it. Always an hard worker he had no patients with people who didn't want to work. Later in life he became a little more tolerant
about people and tried to understand things better. Mans and Anna have four children,
the oldest son Bart immigrated to Canada but the others stayed mostly in Holland. After he lost his job again, he went
looking for something else to do and one of his sons in law's father had connections with a housing company and Mans and Anna
became caretakers of a large complex. which was situated in Zwolle, so they moved there and spend some very good years there
as well. After he retired he moved first in a lovely home in Schoonoord, Drenthe, sold it later, and moved back to Assen,
Drenthe, and lived there, till he passed away. Mans and Anna have several grandchildren and great grandchildren and
more expected. Mans and Anna's health are failing but still full of hope and strong in their faith in God, knowing that they
are taken care of. Mans and Anna live in Assen a city they love, Mans had a bad fall off his bike and was sent to
a nursinghome but was expected to return to his own home soon. He came back home for a bit but had another fall and had to
go back to the nursing home. Mans passed away quietly in his sleep in the nursinghome in Assen on November 25, 2011.
An old picture I got off the internet and thought it belonged
on this website but have no opening for it so I am placing it here.
Mans and Anna's youngest son was born a few years after the
other 3. Here are, Margriet and Hennie with Anne and it looks like he was baptized that day.

Mans showing
how he called his children home. Whistling on their fingers is how the boys often let each other know where they were, Dad
used to call us like that for dinner and Mans in turn did the same. I always stopped when Dad was whistling a tune, it was
so beautiful and he only did it when he was happy
